Trying New Things as We Age

Trying New Things as We Age

Embracing New Challenges Later in Life

Honestly, I must have been kidding myself thinking that becoming an empty nester would mean slowing down. Instead, I’ve found myself filling my “spare” time with plenty of new challenges. And of course, my full‑time job keeps me more than busy 🤣🧵.

This got me thinking about how inspiring it is to see people who take on fresh adventures later in life. Age doesn’t have to be a barrier- in fact, it can be the perfect time to explore new passions, projects, and opportunities.

Inspiring Australian Women Who Tried New Things Later in Life

Here are a few remarkable women whose stories remind us that it’s never too late to start something new:
•     Ronni Kahn AO – In her 50s, Ronni founded OzHarvest, turning a simple idea about food waste into a nationwide movement that has delivered millions of meals to Australians in need.
•     Heather Lee OAM – After her husband passed away, Heather took up competitive race walking in her 70s. Now in her 90s, she still holds multiple world records. She’s also a passionate advocate for premature babies- a cause close to my heart after having two myself. Honestly, I want to be her when I grow up 🥰.
•     Susan Alberti AC – After a successful business career, Susan became a driving force behind the AFL Women’s League in her 60s, reshaping the future of Australian sport and opening doors for generations of female athletes.

Why It’s Never Too Late

These stories remind me- and hopefully remind you too- that it’s never too late to try something new. Whether it’s:
•     A community project
•     A business idea
•     A sport you’ve always loved
•     Or simply a skill you’ve been curious about
Sometimes the second (or third!) chapter of life is the most exciting one. 🌸

Final Thoughts

Trying new things as we age isn’t about chasing achievements- it’s about embracing growth, joy, and the unexpected opportunities that come our way. If these women can start fresh chapters later in life, so can we.
